Romantic relationships can struggle for a number of reasons, and oftentimes it’s no one’s fault. What starts as a “bad week” or month or year can drift into ongoing unhappiness and disconnection that can lead to the end of what was once the happiest and most important part of our lives. If we add in life stressors like career pressures, child care, money stress, and more, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and not give our relationship the attention that it deserves. Thankfully, couples therapy has greatly improved over the years and working with a trained couples therapist can likely save your relationship or your marriage.

Types of Couples Therapy Offered At GearingUP

Each couple has their own needs for what will be effective for their situation. GearingUP offers a wide range of couples therapy options to best address what your unique situation may require. Here are brief descriptions of some of the Couples Therapies offered at GearingUP either online or at our convenient Dallas area locations:

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

One of the most famous couple therapies available, Dr. John Gottman and his wife Dr. Julie Gottman have revolutionized marital and couples therapy through their decades of research and practice in the field with real couples. Gottman Couples Therapy focuses on improving relationships through building mutual understanding, facilitating healthier communication, and fostering opportunities for emotional connection. GearingUP has multiple Gottman trained couples therapists on staff with years of experience!

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples

Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT focuses on the emotional bond between partners and is heavily based on Attachment Theory. EFT helps couples identify and deconstruct negative interaction cycles, create opportunities for emotional bonding, communicate and express themselves more openly and fully, develop new strategies for future conflicts, and create a new way of engaging as a couple.

Mindfulness Based Couples Therapy

Mindfulness Based Couples Therapy uses all of the tools of Mindfulness and meditation to help couples reconnect and repair their relationship on a deeper level. Through principles of Mindfulness practice like non-judgment, radical acceptance, and more, each partner will become much more aligned with their thoughts, emotions, and bodies as a foundation for engaging with their romantic partner.

Couples After Children Therapy

A specialized form of couples and marital therapy from the Gottman institute, this version of couples therapy focuses on the changing dynamic in the relationship after children are introduced into the home. Every couple must navigate added responsibilities of childcare in addition to maintaining their relationship bond through communication, intimacy, and teamwork. Stress from children and co-parenting are often listed as some of the top stressors when relationships break down, but Dr. Gottman and GearingUP’s clinical team are ready to help keep your relationship healthy and connected.

Premarital Therapy

Premarital Therapy helps committed couples considering marriage or lifelong commitments prepare for their life together. Couples therapists often explore a number of different issues including communication and conflict resolution skills, future family plans, financial responsibilities, and more. By first assessing relationship strengths, the couples therapist can determine what areas may need additional resources, actively resolve issues that could lead to future conflict, and help couples understand what leads to long-term happiness together.

Reconnecting Your Relationship Therapy

Couples may simply need help reconnecting with each other if the relationship has not been receiving enough attention. Couples therapists may blend different skills from multiple couples therapy systems like Gottman therapy, EFT, and more to help couples reconnect in their relationship. A more eclectic and customized approach, couples are equipped with the skills their particular relationship needs.

Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy (CBCT)

CBT for Couples may be helpful for couples who are struggling with negative thought patterns, sabotaging belief systems, or cognitive distortions within the relationship. Each person may participate in CBT therapy individually or in couples sessions with both partners, and the therapist will work with both partners to challenge their negative interactions, build healthier coping mechanisms, and correct sabotaging behaviors and thoughts.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Couples

DBT for Couples adapts the original skills curriculum of DBT for use within the context of couples and relationships. Either in individual sessions or together in couples sessions, the therapist will show couples how to utilize skills and strategies from DBT to better regulate emotions, tolerate distressing situations, and build more effective ways to work together. With more effective coping skills and problem solving strategies, couples can rapidly repair their relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start Couples Therapy at GearingUP?

You can enroll for couples therapy in minutes! Contact our office for a quick enrollment with basic information like contact information, insurance details (if using insurance), and payment information. Our staff will schedule your first appointment with one of our senior therapists to discuss your needs and how GearingUP can help you. The first intake appointment is often with the parent or guardian so that GearingUP’s clinical team can get a better idea of what the concerns are, the child’s treatment history, and create a preliminary treatment plan. We often have same day or next day appointments available for new clients, but most new clients are seen in less than one week after contacting our office.

Is Couples Therapy different than Marital Therapy?

Mostly, the difference is just in the name. Both Couples Therapy and Marital Therapy are intended to help committed couples improve their relationship and their lives together. Many treatment professionals prefer to use the term “Couples Therapy” since it applies more broadly and to more relationships.

Couples bring their own goals to therapy depending on their particular situation. Many unmarried couples are interested in strengthening their bond, improving satisfaction and intimacy in the relationship, or work through life transitions. Married couples share those goals, but they are often also working through additional issues such as financial stress, co-parenting concerns, caring for extended family members, and more. No matter your situation – GearingUP’s couples therapists are equipped with proven tools to improve your relationship.

Can only married couples start Couples Therapy?

Couples Therapy is available to any committed relationship couple who are looking to improve their relationship for any number of reasons. Both married and unmarried couples of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

How do therapists become couples therapists?

All GearingUP couples therapists have received advanced training in evidence-based couples therapy methods as well as having a proven track record of couples therapy under supervision of senior clinicians. Either through advanced continuing education courses or certification programs, GearingUP couples therapists have received dozens of hours of training in research-based couples therapy methods, oftentimes directly from the experts who developed them. Different couples therapists on our staff have their own specialties in couples therapy, but please feel free to ask questions and interview your therapist regarding their training and qualifications in couples therapy.

Can I do Couples Counseling on my own if my partner doesn’t want to participate?

Couples Therapy by definition does require both partners. However if your partner is unable or unwilling to enter couples counseling with you, GearingUP’s therapists can still help. Certain forms of skills based individual therapy could help you with evidence-based skills for emotional regulation, improved communication, interpersonal effectiveness, and more. Employing these skills when interacting with your partner could help improve your relationship on their own. In addition, the additional support and resources of individual therapy could help you weather a difficult time in the relationship. GearingUP is ready to help!

Isn’t Couples Therapy for relationships that are already over?

Absolutely not. Relationships can struggle for many reasons, and many couples are able to survive and thrive in their relationship after some of the toughest challenges such as infidelity. Many couples choose to enter couples counseling even when something isn’t necessarily “wrong.” They may feel that they simply want to be more connected, deepen their bond, and enhance their intimacy and relationship. Couples therapy can be a valuable resource for any couple, and it serve as a proactive step toward building a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling relationship.
